PSA Testing
We run community testing events across North Wales so men can check their prostate health without waiting for a GP appointment.

At the heart of our mission is a commitment to empower men through awareness, support and education on prostate health — right here in North Wales.
1 in 8 men in the UK will get Prostate Cancer and that increases to 1 in 4 for Black Men.

You don't have to face Prostate Cancer alone.
We are a friendly, welcoming and volunteer-led Support Group providing peer support, information, understanding and a listening ear to men affected by Prostate Cancer across North Wales.
Whether you have just been diagnosed, are undergoing treatment, have completed treatment, are living with the effects of treatment, or simply need someone to talk to who understands, we are here for you.
Our Support Group brings together men, their partners and family members in a safe, relaxed and friendly environment where experiences can be shared, questions discussed and friendships formed. Sometimes, talking to someone who has “been there” can make all the difference.
Supporting Men Across North Wales
We hold regular Support Group Meetings at:
📍 Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor
📍 Maggie's North Wales, Bodelwyddan
📍 Tywyn, Meirionnydd
Our aim is to make support accessible to men and their families within their own communities, wherever they live across North Wales.
Where possible, Cancer Specialist Nurses and other healthcare professionals are invited to attend our meetings, providing information and answering questions. We do not provide medical advice, but our members can offer something equally valuable — real-life experience, understanding and support from people who have travelled the Prostate Cancer journey themselves.
More Than a Support Group
Alongside our Support Group Meetings, we are committed to raising awareness of Prostate Cancer, encouraging men to understand their risk, promoting PSA testing and supporting early detection across North Wales.
We organise and support PSA Testing Events and Prostate Cancer Awareness Events, helping to bring information and access to testing into local communities.
Stay Connected
All future Support Group Meetings, PSA Testing Events, Awareness Events and other activities will be advertised on our Facebook Page and new website, nwpcsg.org
Whatever stage of the journey you're at, you are not alone.
Come along. Talk to us. Listen. Share. Support.
We are here for you.
We run community testing events across North Wales so men can check their prostate health without waiting for a GP appointment.
Informal get-togethers with tea, guest speakers and honest conversation. Partners, families and carers are always welcome.
Men who have been through diagnosis and treatment are on the end of the phone, ready to listen and share what helped them.
Prostate Cancer mainly affects men over 50, but it can affect younger men too. Importantly, Prostate Cancer does not always cause symptoms in its early stages. You can have Prostate Cancer and feel completely well. That is why we encourage men not to wait for symptoms before taking their prostate health seriously. Your age, family history and ethnicity can all affect your risk. Men with a family history of prostate cancer and Black men are at higher-than-average risk and are encouraged to discuss PSA testing with their GP from around age 45. Current UK clinical consensus recommends that all informed men should have the opportunity to access a PSA blood test from age 50. At the North Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group, we believe men should have the opportunity to understand their prostate health and make an informed decision about PSA testing. In partnership with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT), we provide PSA testing events for men aged 40–80 across North Wales. These community testing events provide an additional opportunity for men to access PSA testing in a friendly and supportive environment, particularly for those who may find it difficult to access testing through their GP. Don't wait for symptoms. Know your risk. Know your PSA. Know your prostate.
PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen. It is a protein produced by the prostate gland and can be measured with a simple blood test. The test can be carried out at your GP surgery or at one of our NWPCSG PSA testing events, delivered in partnership with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust, for men aged 40–80. A blood sample is taken and the amount of PSA in your blood is measured. PSA levels can naturally increase as the prostate gets larger with age, but a raised PSA can also be caused by other conditions, such as an enlarged prostate, prostatitis or a urinary infection. A PSA test is NOT a diagnosis of Prostate Cancer. A raised PSA does not necessarily mean that cancer is present, and a PSA level within the expected range does not completely rule out prostate cancer. This is why PSA testing is about understanding risk, rather than simply receiving a “positive” or “negative” cancer result. If your PSA is raised, your GP or healthcare professional can discuss what the result means for you and whether further investigation is needed.
The PSA test is currently the best first blood test available to help identify men who may be at increased risk of Prostate Cancer, but it is not perfect.
There can be both false-positive and false-negative results.
A raised PSA does not automatically mean Prostate Cancer. According to the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust:
Around 3 out of 4 men with a raised PSA do not have Prostate Cancer.
Around 1 out of 4 men with a raised PSA will have Prostate Cancer.
Around 15% of men with Prostate Cancer may not have a raised PSA level.
This is why a PSA result should never be considered a diagnosis on its own.
If your PSA is raised, your GP may recommend repeating the test or carrying out further investigations. Depending on the circumstances, this can include an MRI scan and, where appropriate, a biopsy.
It is also important to remember that one PSA result is only a snapshot. Your result needs to be considered alongside your age, family history, ethnicity, symptoms, previous PSA results and other risk factors.
There is currently no single testing interval that is right for every man. Some men may choose to have their PSA checked every couple of years, while men at higher risk may need to discuss testing more frequently with their healthcare professional.
Our message is simple:
Don't wait for symptoms.
Know your risk.
Know your PSA.
Early detection can provide more opportunities for investigation and treatment.

A Prostate Cancer diagnosis can change everything in an instant. Behind every diagnosis is a person. A family. A story. And a journey that can sometimes feel frightening, confusing and overwhelming. At the North Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group, we understand because many of us have been there too. Whether you've just been diagnosed, are waiting for treatment, living with the effects of treatment, or simply need someone who understands, you don't have to navigate it alone. We provide a safe, friendly and confidential space where men and their partners can: Talk openly about the things that can be difficult to discuss elsewhere. Ask questions and share concerns without embarrassment. Meet others who understand what you're going through. Share experiences and learn from one another. Find support and information when you need it most. Celebrate the good days and find someone beside you on the difficult ones. There is no judgement. No embarrassment. No need to pretend everything is okay. Just people who understand, listen and care. Because sometimes, the greatest comfort is simply knowing you're not alone. Our volunteer committee coordinates meetings, fundraising and awareness work across North Wales.

Chairman
My journey with prostate cancer has shaped my life and given me a clear purpose: to raise awareness, support men and their families, and help save lives through earlier detection.
In 2019, while working for North Wales Police, I underwent a PSA blood test that revealed an elevated result. Despite having no symptoms, further investigations eventually led to a prostate cancer diagnosis in November 2020. In January 2021, I underwent a radical prostatectomy at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Experiencing prostate cancer first-hand opened my eyes to the importance of awareness, timely investigation, access to appropriate treatment and the emotional impact a diagnosis can have on both men and their loved ones. I came to realise that too many men know too little about prostate cancer, often until it affects them or someone close to them.
Since becoming Chairman of the North Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group in 2024, I have been dedicated to ensuring that no man or family has to face this journey alone. Working alongside our volunteers and healthcare partners, we provide peer support, share experiences, raise awareness and campaign for improved access to prostate cancer services throughout North Wales.
As an Ambassador for the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT), I am particularly passionate about promoting PSA testing and encouraging men to take an active interest in their prostate health. Through our partnership with GFCT, we have helped deliver community PSA testing events across North Wales, providing men with opportunities to get tested and make informed decisions about their health.
I am committed to challenging misconceptions, encouraging men to speak openly about their health and ensuring that people have access to the information they need. I firmly believe that where a man lives should not determine the quality of information, support and care available to him.
In recognition of my community work and commitment to raising awareness, I was honoured to receive a Community Champion Award in February 2026. I was also privileged to be invited to 10 Downing Street to attend a reception celebrating St David's Day, an occasion recognising Wales and its people.
Although my prostate cancer diagnosis was a life-changing experience, I have chosen to use it as a positive force for change. Every conversation, every support meeting and every PSA testing event offers an opportunity to make a difference.
My mission is simple: to raise awareness, improve support and help ensure that no man or family is left facing prostate cancer alone.

The North Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group is proud to work in partnership with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust to promote prostate cancer awareness and encourage men to take control of their prostate health.
Through this partnership, we support and promote PSA testing initiatives across North Wales, helping to make testing more accessible to men aged 40 and over.
The Trust's support and expertise, together with the work of our volunteers and supporters, enables us to reach more men, raise awareness and potentially help detect prostate cancer at an earlier stage.
Together, we are helping to save lives through awareness, education and early detection.
We are grateful to the businesses and groups whose support makes our PSA testing events, meetings and awareness work possible.
